Dermal Fillers Q & A
Dermal fillers are cosmetic treatments that are injected in the face for a variety of cosmetic benefits. Dermal fillers like Juvederm are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance which very closely mimics the hyaluronic acid produced naturally by the human body. While the body does produce its own hyaluronic acid, the quantity will dramatically reduce over time. This can lead to loss of volume, which is especially noticeable in the facial tissues. Dermal fillers can be precisely injected to correct this loss of volume, and it can also be used to add volume to areas like the lips.
The most common areas for dermal fillers are the lips, the cheek area, and the nasolabial fold area. The nasolabial folds are those lines going from the nose to the corners of the lips. Dermal fillers can also be used in other areas of the face, and can even be used to change the appearance of the tip of the nose. While it is not common, dermal fillers are sometimes injected under the eyes to correct problems like under eye bags. Dermal fillers can also be used to help contour the jaw line.
It can vary widely by product and by the patient. The dermal fillers used most commonly today typically last for at least six months, but in some people, the correction can last for as long as nine months. If you have regular touch-up treatments, you may find that your treatments are needed less frequently, and less product is needed for each treatment. Some types of dermal fillers are classified as “semi-permanent,” and they may last longer than hyaluronic acid fillers.
