Physical Exams Q & A
Physical exams are routine check-ups that assess a patient’s overall health. They’re one of the most important components of preventative medicine. During a physical exam:
- Doctors will perform routine checks and recommend any appropriate tests
- Doctors have an opportunity to educate patients on health issues that affect them
- Patients have a chance to ask questions about their health
- Patients and doctors can begin to develop a relationship
Having an existing relationship in place is especially helpful when patients become sick. When there’s an existing relationship, doctors are already familiar with the patient’s medical history and family history, and patients already know what the doctor’s medical philosophy is.
Because they’re so helpful, everyone should have a regular physical exam. Along with being a generally good thing to do, some patients may need a physical exam before they can:
- Play in a sports league
- Be hired in specific industries (e.g. trucking)
- Get life insurance
Because physical exams are considered preventative medicine, they’re often covered by health insurance when performed as a routine check-up. In many cases, patients don’t even have a copay. Policies vary, so each patient should read their own policy to see what coverage they have, but most provide coverage for exams that are part of a patient’s preventative medical care.
If a physical is needed to get a life insurance policy or job, the physical may not be covered by a patient’s health insurance policy. In these cases, though, the prospective employer or life insurance company might pay for the exam.
When selecting a doctor to go to for a physical exam, residents of Asheboro and Ramseur should look for a physician who is licensed in North Carolina and board-certified. Additionally, they should seek out someone who has a practice that’s easy to get to, so going to and from the appointment is easy.
